"Sinners" Names & Their Meanings

I had a look at the names for all the characters in Ryan Coogler's "Sinners" to see if there was significance behind them.  Turns out most of them seem to have been chosen with intention.

Samuel - a Hebrew name meaning "God has heard" or "name of God". Maybe it's a stretch but I like the idea of it referring to the ancestors "hearing" his music.

Jedidiah - Sammie's father. A Hebrew name meaning "friend of God".  Fitting for a pastor.

Ruthie - a Hebrew name meaning "companion", which works well given she is Jedidiah's wife.

Elias & Elijah - Given they are twins, it's fitting that they have the same name just from different origins.  Elijah is Hebrew and Elias is Greek, both meaning "the Lord is God". Elijah is a well-known prophet in the Bible.

Hogwood - a surname with English origin, appearing in American history during the 17th history from British colonists.  It originates from a family in Sussex and meant "the wood frequented by hawks".

Bo - there are a few variations of this name in Chinese with different meanings.  Depending on which character is used, the name can mean "vast, learned, extensive (to refer to a well-read person)", "wave (representing a free spirit)", or "elder/senior".  Its Norse origins give it the meaning "live/exist".

Grace - this comes from Latin originally, meaning "blessing" or "favor".

Lisa - a form of the name Elizabeth, this name has a few different translations but the German meaning is "God's promise", often attributed to girls born to parents after a long time of waiting for a child, or after experiencing fertility issues.  I like to think she was named for this reason, because it deepens the intense love and protective feelings her parents have for her.

Delta Slim - Delta refers to the place, while Slim is an affectionate nickname given to long and lanky individuals.

Pearline - derived from the English word "pearl", this name means "purity, beauty, precious".

Mary - the Hebrew meanings are "bitter" or "rebellious", which suits the character very well!

Annie - with Hebrew, French, and English origins, this name generally translates to "grace" or "favor".  As we know, grace means blessing.

Cornbread - a nickname afforded to a naive or unsophisticated person generally from the American South.

Therise - this Greek name means "to harvest", which is fitting since the only time we see the character she is harvesting cotton.

Bert - a short form for a lot of names, the word itself comes from the Old English berht, meaning "bright".

Joan - this is a feminine form of John, a Hebrew name meaning "gift from God".

Remmick - this name has various origins, including German, Latin, and Slovenian. It was originally a surname.  The spelling is an Americanized version. A meaning for it is "remedy" or "cure", which is exactly what the character of Remmick thinks he's offering.

Chayton - this is a Lakota name, used by the Sioux tribes meaning "falcon/hawk".
